In spring 1939, Sonia's father leaves Poland amid rising antisemitism to go to North America and find a new home where his family can live peacefully. Stranded there when the war breaks out, he will stop at nothing to reunite his family. In Nazi-occupied Poland, seventeen-year-old Sonia is equally determined, and she faces the dreaded Gestapo armed with exit visas and a precious Nicaraguan passport her father has miraculously obtained. Locked in a ghetto, witnessing atrocities and deportations, Sonia's ominous wait for a reprieve turns desperate in the face of the mounting death toll. How will she escape her fate?
Author Biography
Sonia Caplan (n?e Roskes) was born in 1922 in Tarn?w, Poland. After surviving the Holocaust, she arrived on North American soil in February 1945. In Canada, Sonia reunited with family, married, and raised three children while pursuing studies in literature. Throughout her life, she focused on her love for family and her passion for language and literature. Sonia Caplan passed away in 1987.
