In 1975 he was wounded in Beirut and, during his convalescence, completed the manuscript for \u003ci\u003eA Rumor of War, \u003c\/i\u003e a Vietnam memoir that was published while Caputo was in Moscow, back on assignment for the \u003ci\u003eTribune\u003c\/i\u003e. In 1977 he left the paper and turned to novels, of which he has written four, plus another memoir.
