This comprehensive survey of British colonial governors' houses and buildings used as state houses or capitols in the North American colonies begins with the founding of the Virginia Colony and ends with American independence. In addition to the 13 colonies that became the United States in 1783, the study includes three colonies in present-day Florida and Canada--East Florida, West Florida and the Province of Quebec--obtained by Great Britain after the French and Indian War.

Author Biography

Hoke P. Kimball has a lifelong interest in colonial and civil war history, architecture and preservation. He was awarded the Atlanta Preservation Center's Vitruvius Award which recognizes artistic creations and contributions in the architecture, design, and preservation fields in service to the center's mission. Retired from the North Carolina Division of Air Quality, he lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Bruce Henson is a retired associate dean of the Georgia Tech Library. He was awarded the Atlanta Preservation Center's Vitruvius Award which recognizes artistic creations and contributions in the architecture, design, and preservation fields in service to the center's mission. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.
