Author Biography
gene manning was born in Milwaukee in 1936 & grew up in Shorewood, the 1st suburb north of the city along Lake Michigan when charlotte seaman moved there with her family from Fargo in 1945, he walked her home on her 1st day @ Lake Bluff school they married in 1958 & by 1964 had 3 sons: paul, michael, & john gene had graduated 1st in his class, summa cum laude, with honors in history from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York in 1958, joined W N Medlicott's seminar in International History @ the London School of Economics in 1958-59 on a fellowship from the Madison & Milwaukee Rotary Clubs, & received a Ph D in history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1966, writing a dissertation on "Old Bob La Follette: Champion of the People" He taught history for 3 years @ the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire & one year @ Carleton College in Minnesota, from which he joined the Far East Staff of CIA's Office of National Estimates in the fall of 1967 Over the next 5 years he was the principal drafter of 8 National Intelligence Estimates on prospects for several countries in southeast Asia & the Pacific He then served 2 years as an Attache @ the US Embassy in Singapore, returning to CIA in 1974 to do political analysis 1st on western Europe & then as an analyst & manager on central & southern Africa, occasionally substituting as an editor of the National Intelligence Daily & of the President's Daily Brief He retired in 1993 after 3 years as an analyst in CIA's Counterintelligence Center
