Doug meets a young woman in the foyer of a cinema in east Oxford and offers to buy her a drink. The next morning the woman's mutilated body is found in a ditch. And Doug is arrested on suspicion of murder. But with no evidence to hold him, Doug is released from Cowley Road police station. Later that week, Doug heads to the pub to meet a new client. But as he's buying her a drink at the bar, she disappears, leaving a book on her vacant seat. First woman he meets ends up dead in a ditch. Second woman he meets disappears.
